The 20th Istanbul Jazz Festival welcomes the world-renowned voice of R&B and soul music, Alicia Keys.

The 14-time Grammy-winner, singer, composer and song writer will be performing for the first time in Turkey on Tuesday, 2 July, at 21:00 at KücükÇiftlik Park.

With her wide repertoire of classical piano Alicia Keys released her debut album “Songs in A Minor” in 2001. She sold over 12 million albums worldwide, and won 5 Grammy awards, including Best New Artist and Best R&B album. In 2003 she released her second studio album “The Diary of Alicia Keys”. She won 4 Grammy awards, including Best R&B Album. During the same year Keys released her live “Unplugged” album. It was the first bestselling unplugged album since Nirvana’s unplugged release and it went to number 1 in the charts.

Keys in 2007 released her third studio album “As I am”. With this album she won 3 Grammy awards. In 2009 with her fourth studio album “The Element of Freedom” rose to number one on the charts in the United Kingdom. Alicia Keys, with

Jay-Z in 2009, released the song “Empire State of Mind” which was highly successful. It was selected the second best song of the year by Rolling Stone magazine. Keys and Jay-Z won a Grammy for Best Rap Song and a Grammy for Best Rap / Sung Collaboration for “Empire State of Mind”.
Keys has sold over 40 million albums worldwide. She is considered one of the best-selling female musicians of her generation. Her songs “Falling”, “No One”, “If I Ain’t Got You”, was at the top of the charts for a number of weeks in dozens of countries all over the world. Powerful vocalist and songwriter Alicia Keys released her 5th album “Girl on Fire” in May 2012 skyrocketing to its place at the top of the charts. Her album will be followed by a tour entitled “Set the World on Fire” featuring Alicia Keys. She will perform at concerts in cities such as London, Paris, Vienna, Monaco, and Munich.

On 2 July she will perform at KücükÇiftlik Park within the scope of the Istanbul Jazz Festival.

      Rock band Duman combines elements of traditional Turkish folk music with modern rock. Duman consists of Kaan Tangöze (vocals and rhythm guitar), Batuhan Mutlugil (lead guitar and backing vocals), and Ari Barokas (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Cengiz Baysal (drums).

Duman released their first album, “Eski Köprünün Altında” in 1999 and second, “Belki Alışman Lazım” in 2002. Both albums achieved great success in Turkey and carried the new generation of Turkish rock bands to the mainstream. In 2004, Duman did somnething new as they released their live concert in DVD format. Their fourth album, “Seni Kendime Sakladım” was released in 2005.

In 2009, Duman have been recording new work in Ireland at Grouse Lodge where famous artists such as Michael Jackson, R.E.M. and Muse have recorded albums. After a 4 year gap between their last album “Seni Kendime Sakladım”, they have released not one but two albums simultaenously. These two albums are self titled “Duman I” and Duman II”.

The Archaeology of Excavation Photography

9 March – 10 June 2013

The exhibition “(In) Site Sagalassos”, features excavation photos of Sagalassos, “The City of Emperors”, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries worldwide. The story of the unearthing of the city of Sagalassos in the Burdur province, with its long history of settlement going back to 4200 BC, is captured through the lenses of renowned Belgian photographers Bruno Vandermeulen and Danny Veys. Specializing in cultural heritage, the photography of Vandermeulen and Veys reflect the transformations an archaeological city undergoes during the excavations, and the relationship between photography and archaeology through the details they captured at the excavation area.

The exhibition is a collection of the photographical impressions of Vandermeulen and Veys while working at the excavation of Sagalassos, included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List 2009. The project that began in 2003 by the two photographers, who provided documentation for archaeological research, brings a new perspective to site-specific photography.

Justin Bieber is a Canadian pop/R&B singer. His performances on YouTube were seen by Scooter Braun, who later became his manager. Braun arranged for him to meet with Usher in Atlanta, Georgia, and Bieber soon was signed to a joint venture between Braun and Usher and then with L.A. Reid and Island Def Jam.

His debut single, “One Time”, was released worldwide during 2009, and charted within the top thirty in over ten countries. The “All Arts Istanbul” Fair will be organized for the first time in April at the Istanbul Congress Center, to showcase classical Turkish arts as well as ancient, modern and contemporary arts. The fair will host collectors and academics from various regional countries, while also displaying the paintings of renowned Ottoman palace painter Fausto Zonaro.

Zonaro lived in the area of Istanbul known as Pera in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, in today’s district of Beyoğlu on the European side of the city. Over time he came to the attention of the aristocratic circles and received from them orders for his works. Zonaro painted portraits, landscapes and historical paintings, and it is claimed that “Zonaro was one of those who made a major contribution to the development of western style art in Turkey.” A prolific artist who created hundreds of works, an retrospective exhibition of his work in Florence in 1977 “received wide acclaim in the art world.”

Today, the majority of Zonaro’s works remain in Istanbul, and many are on display in the city’s leading museums. His pictures can be found in the state museums of Topkapı Palace, Dolmabahçe Palace and the Istanbul Military Museum. Other works can be found in the private Sakıp Sabancı Museum and the Pera Museum, while many also belong to private collectors in Turkey.

“All Arts Istanbul” aims to attract collectors, art lovers and art investors and includes visits to museums and artist studios, as well as exclusive collection presentations, discussions and panels.

The fair will have three different categories. The first includes traditional Turkish arts such as calligraphy, “ebru,” miniatures and tiles; the second includes antique paintings, ephemera and jewelry, while the third features modern and contemporary paintings.

During a press conference, All Arts Istanbul Chief Executive Officer Ali Güreli said Istanbul was well on its way to becoming one of the most important contemporary art centers in the world, citing the Istanbul Biennial and the seventh Istanbul Contemporary Fair are two important recent examples of this development.
